Making healthy sugar-free ketchup is easy! This recipe is also featured in our KetoDiet App and my first book! It takes just a few minutes to prepare and tastes so much better than any store-bought ketchup. Depending on the ingredients you use, it will only take 5 minutes (with garlic and onion powder) or up to 15 minutes (if you use fresh garlic and onion).

This tasty low-carb ketchup goes well with Low-Carb "French Fries" made with rutabaga instead of starchy potatoes. And if you can find parsley roots, it's definitely worth making these Parsley Root Fries!

If you're still not sure if it's worth making your own ketchup, here is a list of ingredients found in one of the most popular ketchup products (Heinz):

Tomato concentrate from red ripe tomatoes, distilled vinegar, high fructose corn syrup (the worst type of sweetener!), corn syrup, salt, spice, onion powder, natural flavouring (you can never be sure what this ingredient stands for).

Ingredients (makes about 1 1/2 cups)

  • 1 cup tomato paste (240 g/ 8.5 oz)
  • 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar or wine vinegar (60 ml/ 2 fl oz)
  • 1 small onion (60 g/ 2.1 oz) or 1/2 tsp onion powder or 1 tsp onion granules
  • 2 cloves garlic or 1/4 tsp garlic powder or 1/2 tsp garlic granules
  • 1/8 tsp ground allspice
  • 1/8 tsp ground cloves
  • 2 tbsp Allulose or Erythritol (20 g/ 0.7 oz)
  • Optional: 3-6 drops liquid Stevia for more sweetness
  • 1 tsp sea salt, or to taste
  • 1/2 tsp ground black pepper, or to taste
  • 2 to 4 tbsp water to thin down

Instructions

  1. Peel and cut the onion and garlic in smaller pieces. Have all the other ingredients on hand ready to be used. Homemade Sugar-Free Ketchup
  2. Place everything in a small sauce pan and simmer over low heat for 5-10 minutes. Add a dash of water if it's too thick. Homemade Sugar-Free Ketchup
  3. Place everything in a blender or use an immersion blender and pulse until smooth.
    Note: If you're using garlic powder and onion powder (or granules), you can skip the blending altogether. You will only need to heat it up and cook for a minute to let the sweetener dissolve. Homemade Sugar-Free Ketchup
  4. Done! Pour in a glass jar and keep in the fridge up to a month or preserve for longer (water-bath canning works best). Try with Low-Carb French Fries made with rutabaga or Parsley Root Fries. Homemade Sugar-Free Ketchup

Hi, can a jar of tomato Passata be used for the tomato paste.

You could use it but you will need to cook it for longer to reduce it. Tomato paste is thick but pasta is almost like thicker tomato juice.

I gave up eating ketchup a few years ago, when I went lo-carb. However, I am trying to encourage my husband to reduce his carb intake so I made a batch of this ketchup. It was absolutely delicious. Tomatoe puree or paste

I suppose "paste" - it is the concentrated, thick paste. Where I live we use these interchangeably 😊

Mine came out to sweet. But it tasted really good with sweet potato fries. I will make this again, thank you!!!!!

I think that may happen with some types of tomatoes - some are sweeter than others so I'd skip the sweetener or use it "to taste" 😊

Can this be frozen?

I haven't thought of that but I think you can freeze it in an ice cube tray. I do that with my BBQ sauce and Thai curry paste.

Is it ok to lwave the sweeteners out? I have PCOS nad just can't use any...

Absolutely! Sweeteners are always optional in recipes like these - it depends on your palate.

I a long-time lover of Heinz, hater of Hunts, 365, and all other grocery ketchups. I have been guiltily eating Heinz out of the fridge, even though we went keto 3 months ago. I made this recipe for a keto meatloaf, and after I tasted it, I poured all my Heinz down the sink. I'd rather have the Heinz bottle for my winter sowing in the garden than the ketchup that was in it. That's how much I love this recipe. Thanks!
P.S. This went extra fast for me because I didn't simmer and I didn't immersion blend--I just pressed the onion and garlic through my garlic crusher and added in a can of tomato paste for thickness. So good!

For how long does this stay good in the refrigerator?  

I usually use mine in just a few weeks or a couple of months. If sealed properly, it should last for up to 6 months.

Do you know any brand of tomato puree that can be bought in UK with a similar carb content to the one you linked?
I have today bought a Biona Tomato Puree, but unfortunately the label says it has around 14grams of carbs, even though it says only 7.1 grams on their website...

As long as it's only made with tomatoes and with no added sugar, you should be fine 😊

OMG we just made this and it is amazing. Nice and tangy. The allspice and cloves add the perfect hint of tastiness. A new staple in our home for sure!!!!! Now if we could just figure out how to make keto maple bar donuts we would never even leave keto for a minute!!!

I'd say just a couple of minutes so that the air gets out and the jar is sealed.

Hi Rebecca, you can use tomato sauce instead but you'll have to cook it down to get the right consistency. Also, the flavour may not be as strong with tomato sauce. Hope it works! 😊
