Keto smoothies are perfect for those of us with busy lifestyles! This smoothie contains my favourite supplement and an ingredient I use in smoothies on a regular basis — maca powder.

If you are new to maca: start wit 1 teaspoon of maca powder to avoid potential digestive issues. You can gradually add more as you get used to it.

Is Maca Powder Keto?

Just like my turmeric latte, maca is a powerful adaptogen that will help you adapt to — and avoid — damage from environmental factors, like stress, diet, and toxins. It's high in phytochemicals, it will boost your energy levels, strengthen your immune system, and increase stamina and libido.

Although maca powder is relatively high in carbs (63 grams of net carbs per 100 grams), yoiu will only need a small amount. When used in the recommended amounts as a supplement, maca can be a healthy addition to your keto lifestyle.

I changed the way I ate in 2011, when I was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s, an autoimmune disease that affects the thyroid. I had no energy, and I found it more and more difficult to maintain a healthy weight.

That’s when I decided to quit sugar, grains, and processed foods, and to start following a whole-foods-based ketogenic approach to food.

This sounds delicious and perfect for work but is it possible to make the night before or will it separate with the fat? Also can I use different nut butters also, thank you

It might separate a little but I'm not sure as I always make these fresh. You'll need to give it a try 😊

Great article! I’m new to keto so still learning what to buy. Would you mind pointing me to a good maca powder? TIA

Thank you Simone, the one I used is from Naturya. It depends where you live. I included a link to Amazon in the ingredients.

Is the coconut milk you used from a can? What brand do you suggest?

I use Aroy-D for smoothies which is liquid and from a carton. You can use canned coconut milk too, just shake before using and use room temperature coconut milk (to avoid splitting). I like Aroy-D because it tastes best.

May I use just almond milk instead of coconut milk?

Yes you can do that - even cashew or macadamia milk would be great options.

This smoothie is absolutely delicious!! I added a bit of stevia extract but I don't think it needs it. This will serve as my go-to smoothie. Yummy and filling, and I may try to make it even creamier.

Thank you Kes!

Just got all the stuff to try this recipe thank you soooo much can't wait to try!!!

Can I use  protein  pea powder instead?

Yes you can, Nuzest is a good option.

Good recipe, I will try. My coconut oil is always hard, what can i do?

You can use coconut oil, even if it's not melted, as long as you blend it well 😊

I’m just starting out with the keto diet for health reasons. Maca powder seems to be high in carbohydrate. 100 g of Maca powder contains 60.9 g of carbohydrate and only 10 g of protein. Is this any good for the keto diet?!

Yes, it is relatively high in carbohydrates but you can use it because you will only need a small amount. It is meant to be used as a supplement. The health benefits outweigh the carb content 😊

Is there a substitute for maca powder? I live outside the US and do not have access to it.

You can use other "superfood" supplements such as lucuma powder, turmeric, baobab powder, etc. I hope this helps!

I can't find collagen, can I use something different?

You could use regular gelatin powder, or protein powder (up to 1/4 cup), or ground chia seeds (1 tbsp).

Would fresh raw milk work in place of the almond milk?  We have cows and it would seem silly to buy almond milk.

It depends... Most people avoid milk because it's relatively high in carbs. If that's not an issue for you, then you could use full-fat milk from grass-fed cows. Keep in mind that 3/4 cup of full-fat milk contains 8-9 grams of carbs (almond milk is low in carbs and low in fat).
