In this review I'd like to share my thoughts on Dr. Almond who make a wide variety of low-carb baking mixes, including several types of keto bread, grain-free bread crumbs, and even pizza dough. The company is run by Sammy and Moni, two passionate bakers determined to make the best low-carb bread mixes and healthy snacking options.
I tested 6 different bread mixes, breadcrumbs, pizza dough, crispy cheese pop, nut butters, coconut butter, and powdered cacao butter.
Dr. Almond is currently shipping to several European countries: Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Luxembourg, Italy, Netherlands, Sweden, Poland, Republic of Ireland, United Kingdom (UK), Belgium, Spain, France and Greece. There are no immediate plans for shipping outside Europe.
Coconut Butter, Almond Butter and Hazelnut Butter
Coconut butter, also known as coconut manna or creamed coconut is high in fat and perfect for keto snacking. I often use coconut butter to thicken curries, or to make low-carb cookies. Compared to "creamed coconut" which I often use in my recipes, this coconut butter is creamier and contains more healthy fats, which is ideal for making fat bombs.
Dr. Almond's almond butter and hazelnut butter are both made with roasted nuts. Roasting enhances flavour and makes nut butters irresistible. Both of the jars had about 1-inch of nut oil on top, so if you see a layer fat on top, don't panic. This separation is perfectly natural and the oil can be mixed with the nut butter, or drizzled over salads.
Dr. Almond's Cheese Pop is great for keto snacking - made with 100% gouda cheese, crispy and zero in carbs. I would love to see it in cinemas as a keto-friendly snacking option! As with any keto snacks, especially cheese and nuts, it's easy to overindulge. Just make sure you stick with the recommended serving size.

Dr. Almond's Pizza Dough is so versatile. You can use it to make one thick, fluffy crust like I did, or two thin crispy crusts. I topped mine with homemade marinara sauce, Mexican chorizo, mozzarella, tomatoes and fresh basil. One pack will be enough for 4 people (main dish) or 8 people (appetiser). There's only 1.2 grams net carbs per serving (1/4 pack)!
I made these tasty chicken nuggets with Dr. Almond's Breadcrumbs and Powdered Cacao Butter. The result was great, although next time I'm going to pan-fry them instead of baking them in the oven. To get them golden brown, I had to bake them for a little longer and the chicken got too dry. Please note that it contains peanuts and is not suitable for those who follow a strict primal/paleo diet.

Some of the best products I've tried are Dr. Almond's bread mixes. The bread is light, fluffy on the inside with a crispy crust on the outside. After all, Sammy and Moni put a lot of effort in making sure that the bread mixes are fine-tuned to perfection!
I've tried 6 bread mixes. All of them are low in carbs and made with different blends of nut and seed flours, coconut flour, psyllium husk powder, egg white powder, gluten-free raising agents and salt. Every bread I've tried was unique. Two of the baking mixes were nut-free, and apart from the Moroccan Flatbread, all recipes are also paleo-friendly. Once baked, they can be sliced and frozen for several months.
To prepare, all you need is to slowly mix the bread mix with water and bake according to instructions. The dough can be shaped into loaves or buns. If you can't decide which one to start with, make the buns. Compared to a loaf, they have a crispier crust and are fluffier inside with less moisture (as you may know, excessive moisture is a common issue when making low-carb bread).
Breads with Seeds
The first one I tried was the Weltmeister Champions Bread (left), which is nut-free, and my absolute favourite from all bread mixes. It has a mild taste, and light & airy texture.
Aachener Seed Bread (right) has a stronger taste and slightly more dense texture, similar to rye bread. If you like savoury rustic-style bread with seeds, then these two are the ones you should go for.
Rustic Dark Breads
The Moroccan Flatbread (left) was one of the fluffiest of all, aromatic and perfect with savoury toppings. The downside is that it contains peanut flour and is not suitable for those who follow a strict paleo/ primal approach.
Rheinisches Farmers Bread (right) has a mild taste similar to graham bread. Both breads are savoury and best topped with cheese, butter or ham.
The Golden Bread (left) is nut-free, neutral-tasting bread and goes well with sweet and savoury toppings. You can buy Dr. Almond's Golden Bread here.
The Toast Bread (right) it the perfect multi-purpose bread. Mine didn't rise as much as I'd expect but it was still good. Next time I'd add 2 to 4 tablespoons of water to help it rise even more and make it fluffier. This bread goes with sweet or savoury toppings. You can buy Dr. Almond's Toast Bread here.
