One of the most challenging parts of following any diet is to figure out what to eat when you are busy or travelling. I usually carry a bag of nuts, beef jerky or avocados. Keto-friendly bars were never my favourite option and most products I've seen were either high in carbs or included ingredients I wanted to avoid.

In this review I'd like to share my thoughts on Peregrine who make keto & paleo, travel-friendly bars. The company was crated by Rudy and Katherine, a couple passionate about health and nutrition and based in Colorado.

What are Peregrine Bars Made With?

Peregrine bars are made with healthy organic ingredients: macadamia nuts, 100% pastured chicken egg (no grain or soy feed), unsweetened huila cocoa, organic unsweetened coconut flakes, pecans, chia seeds, grass-fed ghee, unrefined coconut oil, grass-fed collagen, lime juice, smyrna figs, vanilla extract, Himalayan pink salt, cayenne pepper, stevia leaf.

The bars can be kept at room temperature for up to a week, two months in the fridge, and one year in the freezer.

How Many Carbs per Bar?

Peregrine bars are low in carbohydrates and high in healthy fats. One bar will be enough as a quick snack or a light meal.

Nutrition facts per serving (55 g): Total carbs: 8 g, Fiber: 5 g, Net carbs: 3 g, Protein: 6 g, Fat: 27 g, Saturated fat: 12 g, Energy (calories): 270 kcal, Magnesium: 63 mg (16% RDA), Potassium: 188 mg (9 % EMR). Calories from carbs: 4%, protein: 9%, fat: 87%.

Peregrine Keto & Paleo Bars Review

Not a Sweet Treat But a Meal Replacement

These bars can be used as a meal replacement or a quick snack on the go. They are not sweet like most chocolate treats and they won't satisfy your sweet cravings. It's a healthy meal replacement that will keep hunger at bay.

My favourite treat is 90% dark chocolate and I found these bars to have the perfect balance of sweetness which is very subtle. I like the mild spicy kick and the tangy lime. The first ingredient are macadamia nuts which are delicious and high in heart-healthy monounsaturated fats.

If you like extra dark chocolate, then you will like these bars. My advice is that unless you have been sugar-free & keto for at least 4 weeks, Peregrine is probably not for you. You may simply find it too bitter.

One bar is enough for a light meal or as a pre or post workout snack. Since 87% of calories come from fats and only 9% from protein, I wouldn't have more than one bar per day to ensure you are meeting your protein target.

According to Peregrine:

"This is not a sweet treat - it's high-fat performance fuel! If you don't love dark chocolate, you'll want to approach this one with caution. It gets its flavor from bitter cacao, tangy lime and spicy cayenne - not from added sugars or artificial sweeteners of any kind. It's made entirely from real ingredients, each one intentionally selected to boost your performance and make you more awesome."

Peregrine Keto Bars agreed to give my readers 20% off. To get 20% discount, simply use KETODIETAPP20 at the check out. Peregrine are currently shipping to the US.

I'm always looking for a good meal replacement.  With my work we have a cafeteria and I usually end up at the salad bar which gets rather boring. Plus I need quick "nothing to think about" meals for when I am really busy, which is usually all the time! I'm excited about this product!

The reported energy calories at 270kcal is not accurate. Just calculating the 27g of fat alone at 9kcal/g is 243. Then 6g protein x 4kcal/g is 24 + 8g carb x 4kcal/g is 32. 243+24+32=299. Even if fiber is incorrectly deducted from carb cal, 5g fiber x 4kcal (carbs) = 20. 299-20=279, not 270. How exactly are the macronutrient values being calculated to end up totalling 270kcal/bar?

Reply

I will ask Peregrine if they can explain the 9 kcal difference. When it comes to calculating energy from fibre, you would actually get more accurate results if you don't count fibre than if you count it. That's because:
1) Humans can only derive calories from soluble fibre and they cannot derive any energy from insoluble fibre. Most foods contain both types if fibre, some foods contain more insoluble fibre (e.g.nuts), some more soluble fibre (e.g. kohlrabi). More about this is here: Total Carbs or Net Carbs: What Really Counts?
2) Soluble fibre contains only 2  kcal/gram, not 4 kcal/gram. What this means is that unless you know the amount of soluble and insoluble fibre, there will always be an error. In general, this error is smaller if you don't count calories from fibre.
Back to the calculation: (6 g protein x 4 kcal) + (3 g net carbs x 4 kcal) + (5 g fibre if all soluble x 2 kcal) + (27 g fat x 9 kcal) = 24 + 12 + 10 + 243 = 289 kcal. If most fibre is insoluble (very likely since most of it is nuts), then we get to about 279 kcal.

Reply

Hi Suzanne, thanks for the question!
Nutrition calculators round grams to the nearest gram, and will often round total calories to the nearest 10 kcal mark to avoid implying precision that isn't there.
Like Martina said, we don't count insoluble fiber into kcal calculations. Our bars are probably closer to 274 kcal on average.
Let me know if you have any more questions!

There are a lot of ways to eat keto in restaurants if you think ahead and read the menus carefully. You can always get a burger minus the bun, if nothing else.

Reply

These would be great to have on hand for those times when you're on the go and don't want to eat junk food!

Reply

hard boiled eggs and vegie stix or handful of macadamias

Reply

I try not to have on the go meals, and rather sit down and enjoy.  These Peregrine Bars look great, would love to try.

Reply

Peregrine bars look great. I love macadamias to snack on but if I open a packet I eat too many, so have a bar with the macros already calculated would be so helpful.

Reply

I usually just have some mixed nuts. Perhaps some cheese.
These look like an interesting alternative.

Reply

I think Peregrine Keto Bars would be great to break a fast!

For a quick snack on the go, prepare some wheat free crackers ahead of time and store in a Tupperware container or Ziploc bag.  Wheat free crackers are a satisfying snack to eat by themselves, but with a slice of cheese and some smoked salmon or even as a dipping chip, they are heavenly.

Hard boiled eggs, nuts, salami/cream cheese roll-ups, and salami wrapped around cheese sticks are all possibilities when traveling.

Looks like a great option for travel and sporting events.

Pregorine Keto Bars sound both delicious and healthy. I currently have some nut bars that are my go-to snack, but they are more carbs than I would like to eat. I also buy Parmesan Cheese Whisps, which are made of nothing but cheese, and satisfy that desire to much. Although they are only an inch or so in diameter, I am even able to top them with tuna or a dip.

Reply

I think these would even be a good cinema meal to smuggle in! Would love to try them!

Reply

I agree!! Smile

Reply

I went on a road trip through Australia last year and really needed something like this when the next town was hours away and the service stations were full of un-keto-friendly-foods.

Reply

Almost unheard of...8 total carbs in a meal replacement bar. Natural ingredients, too!

Reply

Best snack ever!

Reply

Those look very interesting. Would appreciate a free chance to try them!

Reply

I snack on a mixture of nuts fried in coconut oil and salted while still warm.
Salami and cheese roll ups are my next go-to travel food.
Small tubs of yoghurt, with vanilla extract, cinnamon and erythritol tastes like milk tart.  Its a good dessert after a cup of take away coffee Laughing

Reply

Cheese, nuts, low carb protein bars, beef jerky

Reply

Just what I've been waiting for.  They sound perfect. Will they be available in UK?

Reply

The giveaway is worldwide, however, to order they are currently only available in the US.

Reply

These are just what I need to stay on track when I'm out and about in summer or on road trips visiting family!

Reply

I am new to keto way of eating and living so I don't know many delicious, fast nutritious snacks.  Thank you for the giveaway!

Reply

Looking forward to trying these. I'm relatively new to Keto--on about my 3rd month--and I have found traveling to be the most difficult for me as its harder to know and control exactly what I'm eating.

Reply

For when there is not time to stop and eat but want to keep your blood sugar levels consistent.  Go for Keto!

Reply

Amazingly handy when stuck somewhere

Reply

The bars sound tasty! I like that they aren't sweet, as I am still battling the sugar demon (no cheats, but oh boy is it tough)!

Reply

Thanks for reviewing these! I just ordered some with the discount because I need travel-friendly Keto food. I can't get fat bombs to stay cold for any flight! These will work great in their place- not sweet but they'll do the trick I think!

Reply

I would love to try these little bars 😀

Reply

These look amazing. Hoping to give them a taste.

Reply

When I travel I usually carry jerky and macadamia nuts. I also carry MCT oil packs and stevia to add to my coffee. These bars look like a very convenient option!

Reply

My fave is always a few nuts and a piece of cheese Smile

Reply

It would be great to win a sample of the Peregrine bars as I am out and about more with my grandson. 😚

Reply

Snack bars that are healthy are super critical. You never know when you might not have access to food when you lead busy lives!

Reply

These bars are fabulous! I disagree that they won't satisfy a sweet craving. They absolutely will if you are full-on keto.  No, it's not like a classic brownie flavor, but as a sugar-free, keto person, I think it's even better!  All fresh ingredients, as if you'd made them yourself.  I'm so glad I came across these a few weeks ago; they're exactly the "sweet-ish" addition to my whole foods keto diet that I was looking for.

Reply

Even better then! Good to know Smile

Reply

Sounds awesome! Fingers crossed!

Reply

Can't wait to try them!

Reply

My best 'keto-on-the-go' tip is to be prepared! Pack lots of nuts, bars, jerky, whatever works for you, and have it available so you're less likely to slip up and give in to a pack of M&Ms and a Coke!

Reply

I am everything KETO!! I would love to try this. I am always on the look out for new items to try.

Reply

Thanks!

Reply

These sound awesome!

Reply

I love the idea of a bar that I can take with me.  I often make my own bars but many of the ingredients melt at room temp so are not good to take with me.
I also always make sure to have "Keto Hamburger Buns" on hand so I can put together a quick sandwich on the run.

Reply

Usually I bake some things ahead of time and have them frozen ready to go when I need to travel. Smoothies are great for setting off on a long car drive early in the morning. But nothing replaces a solid meal which, if I can't eat before I go, I take with me to eat on the plane or car journey. I can imagine that these bars would be a fabulous support, great idea! Especially for overseas travel when you can't take food with you easily. I really hope to try some Smile Smile
with love
